Technical Vulnerabilities of Smart Contracts

Reentrancy and state errors

The classic case: a contract allows an external call to re‑enter a function before balances are updated. An attacker then drains funds repeatedly. Use the Checks‑Effects‑Interactions pattern, add ReentrancyGuard, and—better yet—minimize external calls within critical sections.

Access control and upgrade proxies

Actors: user, liquidator, arbitrageur, admin/DAO, oracle, bridge, external contracts.

Invariants: who can move a balance/parameter and under what conditions? Are there post‑conditions?

Surface: external calls, upgrade/proxy, roles, oracles, pause/unpause, per‑block limits.

Abuses: reentrancy, flash‑loan compositions, MEV, thin liquidity.

Defense: CEI, ReentrancyGuard, timelock, multisig, TWAP/multi‑sources, limits, pause.

Economic Attacks and Manipulations

Price manipulation and oracles

If the “source of truth” can be nudged, it will be. Low liquidity, using your own pools as an oracle, and the absence of TWAP/multi‑sources all invite attack. Choose reliable oracles, restrict exotic tokens as collateral, and introduce a “deviation threshold.”

Governance attacks

Flash loan + instant quorum = a DAO takeover in one block. Add a timelock on execution, exclude flash‑loaned votes, and require a real quorum with a discussion period.

Important: economic attacks aren’t always a “hack.” They often exploit legitimate protocol rules at extreme parameters. Design mechanisms with safety margins.

MEV: How the Mempool Is Exploited

MEV is profit from reordering, including, or excluding transactions during block formation. For users, it’s a hidden “tax” on operations.

Sandwich attacks: a bot buys before your order, pushes the price up, then sells right after—you pay more.
Front‑/back‑running: intercepting profitable arbitrage and liquidations via inclusion priority.
Back‑running TWAP/oracles: nudging the price toward a desired mark during the update “window.”

Defense in depth: users—private submission and strict slippage; protocols—batch auctions/CoW model, publication delays, per‑transaction impact limits.

Bridges and Cross‑Chain Risks

Bridges concentrate both value and complexity. A bug in message verification or validator centralization can translate into hundreds of millions in losses.

Message verification: state‑proof/verification flaws → recipient/owner substitution.
Signature centralization: small M‑of‑N quorums and weak validator opsec.
Operational errors: incorrect updates, uninitialized parameters, outdated dependencies.

Practice: high quorum and distributed validators, withdrawal limits, formal checks, audit every release, and an insurance reserve. For users—don’t park large sums on bridges and split transfers.

Social Engineering, UI, and Infrastructure

Phishing, fake sites, and airdrop traps

“Free” tokens, site clones, and fake support in messengers are common tricks. Never share your seed/keys, verify the domain, and don’t sign suspicious Approve calls. Most importantly—regularly revoke old permissions.

Frontend and key compromise

Defense Methods: a Multi‑Layer Approach

Technical measures matter, but without processes and culture they won’t work. Assemble a “shield” across layers.

First, remove the “low‑hanging” bugs with audits and verification; second, model attacks; finally, engage the community via a bug‑bounty program.

Multi‑stage auditing: external firms + internal reviews; pinned compiler/library versions; blocklist of vulnerable releases.

Incident Response Runbook
